Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for patients with chronic spinal pain, conclude Chinese systematic review authors. They extracted data from 22 RCTs involving 2588 patients. Meta-analysis revealed a significantly superior effect of acupuncture compared with conventional therapies. Acupuncture significantly reduced chronic spinal pain compared with sham acupuncture, medication, usual care, and no treatment. In terms of functional disability, acupuncture was found to improve physical function at immediate-term follow-up, short-term follow-up, and long-term follow-up.
