Acupuncture is effective for myofascial pain reduction in patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD), Brazilian investigators suggest. Thirty-six patients diagnosed with masticatory myofascial pain were divided into acupuncture and control (non-penetrating sham acupuncture) groups. Treatment was performed weekly for five weeks. The acupuncture group showed a significant reduction in pain, which was not observed in the control group. Pain intensity was reduced by 61% one week after treatment, and by 84% one month after treatment. Both groups showed significant improvements in mandibular function and oral health-related quality of life over time.
