Spanish systematic review authors have concluded that acupuncture shows benefit for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Their analysis of data from 28 randomised trials found that, when added to usual treatment, acupuncture improved dyspnoea, quality of life and exercise capacity compared with sham. The benefits on quality of life and exercise capacity were also seen when the comparator was no acupuncture. For lung function, mixed results were obtained, but those that were statistically significant were not deemed to be clinically relevant.
