Auricular acupuncture (AA) treatment can improve dry mouth symptoms in older adults, report Taiwanese researchers.  Seventy-five older institution-dwelling adults were randomly allocated to receive eight weeks of either verum auricular acupuncture (AA) treatment or sham auricular acupuncture (SA).  Auricular acupoints used in the AA group were Shenmen, Point Zero and Salivary Gland 2-prime.  After completing the eight-week intervention, the AA group reported significantly improved subjective symptoms of dry mouth in the domains of difficulty speaking, difficulty swallowing, amount of saliva, dry throat and thirst, compared with the control group.  The AA group also demonstrated higher objective saliva flow that the control group.
