A Brazilian team has found that auricular acupuncture can reduce anxiety and pain in nursing professionals. In a randomised clinical trial, 180 professionals were divided into four groups: control (no intervention), auriculotherapy with ear seeds, auriculotherapy with semi-permanent needles, and placebo (adhesive tape only). Treatment consisted of ten twice weekly sessions for five weeks using the Auricular Protocol for Pain & Anxiety (APPA: Shenmen, Tranquiliser, Thalamus, Sympathetic and Point Zero applied unilaterally at each session for 5-10 minutes). A significant reduction in anxiety occurred with needle auriculotherapy (17%), and a significant reduction in pain levels was seen with both needles (36%) and seeds (24%).
