Chinese clinicians have found gua sha therapy to be effective for relieving perimenopausal symptoms. Eighty perimenopausal women were randomised to receive either weekly 15-minute gua sha treatment sessions in addition to conventional treatment, or conventional treatment alone, for eight weeks. Overall menopause symptom scores were reduced by a significantly greater amount in the gua sha group compared to the conventional treatment group. Specific reductions in symptoms of hot flushes/sweating, paresthesia, insomnia, nervousness, melancholy, fatigue and headache were significantly greater, and quality of life scores were significantly better, in the intervention group.
